Black Friday falls on Friday, 27 November this year, and several Indian retailers run their own versions around it, some starting a week earlier. It is a useful window to buy Christmas, Secret Santa and wedding season gifts at a better price, as long as you shop with a list and not a scroll. Here is how to use it well.
Why it matters for gifting this year
The Diwali rush ends on 8 November, and the wedding season opens on 20 November, so late November lands right between two gifting peaks. Black Friday sits in that gap. Fashion, beauty, electronics and lifestyle brands in India now hold sales around it, and beauty platforms often run their own pink-themed events in the days before. Exact dates vary by store and are usually announced only a few days ahead, so keep an eye on the apps you already use.
It is also a month after the big festive sales, which means many shoppers are tired of discounts. That works in your favour: if you plan, you can pick up thoughtful gifts without the Diwali crowd.
Make a list before the sale starts
The single best habit is to write down who you are buying for before you open any app.
- Christmas and Secret Santa. Office exchanges, friends, godchildren and neighbours who celebrate.
- Wedding season. Couples, plus the bride or groom's family if you are close.
- Birthdays and anniversaries in December and January. Easy to forget, easy to cover now.
- Early New Year gifts. Planners, books and wellness pieces that people start using on 1 January.
Next to each name, write a budget band and one or two categories. This stops you buying five lovely things for the same person and nothing for the rest.
What is worth buying in a sale
- Fragrance and grooming sets. Gift sets from beauty platforms are often part of these events and already come boxed.
- Gadgets and accessories. Earphones, speakers, smartwatches and chargers are the classic Black Friday categories. Our gadget gifts collection has ideas that are not boring.
- Winter wear and accessories. Stoles, mufflers, good socks and cardigans, timed for the cold weeks in North India.
- Premium versions of everyday things. A better bottle, a nicer wallet, a good set of bedsheets. Our luxury gifts under ₹5,000 guide shows how to pick these.
What to skip, even at a discount
- Anything you would not buy at full price. A discount does not make it the right gift.
- Fast-fashion for someone else. Sizes and taste are hard to guess; stick to stoles, scarves and accessories.
- Bundles of unrelated items. They look generous but rarely suit one person.
- Handmade and craft pieces you love. Small artisan brands rarely run deep discounts, and you should not wait for them to. Buy those when you see them.
Check the final price, not the banner
Recent consumer surveys this festive season show shoppers caring more about overall value and product quality than delivery speed, and many say extra fees push the final bill above what they expected. During any sale, compare the price at checkout, after delivery and handling charges, against a normal day. Check the seller, the return window and whether the gift box is included. For gifts, a clear return or exchange policy matters as much as the price.
Budget bands for the season
- Under ₹500: Secret Santa picks, small stationery, a scented candle. Our Secret Santa under ₹500 guide has a full list.
- ₹500 to ₹2,000: a fragrance miniature set, a winter stole, earphones, a good planner
- ₹2,000 to ₹5,000: a smartwatch, a premium grooming kit, a cashmere-blend muffler, a speaker
- Above ₹5,000: larger electronics, a designer bag or a fine fragrance for someone very close

Store, label and wrap
If you buy early, keep a simple system: one shelf or box, each gift labelled with the person's name on a sticky note. Keep invoices in one email folder in case of exchanges. Wrap a week before you need them, not the night before. Sale purchases often arrive in plain cartons, so a kraft box, a cloth wrap or a reusable tote makes them feel chosen rather than ordered. Our gift packaging guide has easy ideas.
