Anniversary gifts by year follow an old Western tradition that gives each milestone a material: paper for the first year, cotton for the second, leather for the third, and so on up to silver at 25 and gold at 50. You do not have to follow it strictly, but it is a useful prompt when you are stuck, and it gives a gift a story beyond "I saw this and thought of you".
How the tradition works
The list started with only a few milestones, such as silver and gold, and grew over the twentieth century. Different countries and sources disagree on some years, so treat it as a creative brief rather than a rulebook. The materials roughly get stronger and more precious as the marriage lasts longer.
The first ten years
1st: Paper
Paper suggests a fresh start. Think a handwritten letter, a custom illustrated map of where you met, concert or movie tickets, a beautiful journal, or a framed print of your wedding vows. A book by an author you both love, with a note on the inside cover, also counts.
2nd: Cotton
Cotton is about comfort as you settle in. A handloom cotton saree or kurta, a hand-block printed bedcover, a soft dohar, or matching cotton loungewear all fit. Indian textiles make this one easy.
3rd: Leather
Leather stands for durability. A wallet, a laptop bag, a watch strap, a leather-bound photo album or a travel organiser. If your partner or their family avoids leather, use vegan leather or cork, which keeps the idea without the material.
4th: Fruit and flowers (or linen)
A fruit tree sapling for the balcony, a monthly flower subscription, a pressed-flower frame, or linen napkins and bedsheets.
5th: Wood
A wooden keepsake box, a carved photo frame, a wooden watch, or a handmade serving board engraved with your initials.
6th to 10th
- 6th, iron or sugar: cast iron cookware for a couple who cooks together, or a box of artisanal sweets.
- 7th, wool or copper: a pashmina shawl, a woollen throw, or copper bottles and tumblers.
- 8th, bronze: a bronze sculpture or a small bronze lamp.
- 9th, pottery: handmade ceramic mugs, a pottery class for two.
- 10th, tin or aluminium: a vintage-style tin box filled with ten small notes, one for each year.
The bigger milestones
- 15th, crystal: crystal glasses or a crystal vase.
- 20th, china: a fine porcelain tea set.
- 25th, silver: silver jewellery, a silver photo frame, silver puja items. See our guide to silver anniversary gifts for parents.
- 30th, pearl: pearl earrings or a pearl necklace.
- 40th, ruby: ruby jewellery or something in deep red.
- 50th, gold: gold jewellery or a gold coin, often a family occasion.
Making it personal
The material is only the starting point. What makes the gift land is the link to your own story:
- For paper, frame the first message you ever sent each other.
- For cotton, choose a weave from the region where your partner grew up.
- For wood, engrave the date and city of your wedding.
A small, specific gift almost always beats an expensive, generic one. Our anniversary gifts collection and our gifts for couples page include many personalised and keepsake options that fit the yearly themes.
Budget bands
- Under ₹1,000: handwritten letters, a journal, a pressed-flower frame, a set of copper tumblers.
- ₹1,000 to ₹5,000: a leather wallet, a cotton saree or kurta, a wooden keepsake box, a pottery class.
- ₹5,000 and above: pashmina, silver or pearl jewellery, crystal glassware, a weekend trip.
Presentation tip
Lean into the theme with the wrapping too. Wrap a paper gift in a handwritten letter instead of gift paper; tie a cotton gift with a strip of matching fabric; present a wood gift in a small crate. It makes the theme obvious before the box is even opened. More ideas on our gift packaging page.
In short
- 1st paper, 2nd cotton, 3rd leather, 5th wood, 25th silver, 50th gold
- Treat the list as a prompt, not a rule
- Tie the material to your own story for a romantic touch
- Swap leather for vegan alternatives where needed
- Theme the wrapping too
